Macular and Glaucoma Awareness Week 2024!

This week is a big week in optometry because it’s both Macular Week and Glaucoma Awareness Week!

The Retina is the skin inside the eye that reacts to light and lets you see. The Macula is the most sensitive part of the retina and gives you your central vision. When this becomes damaged, it can have a huge impact on the vision.

Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve, which takes information from the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. This can cause blind spots in the vision, usually beginning at the edges of your vision. People with Glaucoma usually do not notice this themselves and so a sight test is needed to check for it.

Both of these conditions can affect the vision, but problems are often treatable if they are caught early. This is why it’s important to have regular routine sight tests with your opticians, and to let your optician know immediately if you notice your vision changing.

If you are due a sight test, have noticed a difference in your vision, or have a family history of problems with the Macula or Glaucoma, contact us today and speak to our friendly team to arrange an appointment.
